Cork City Council received funding under the Sustainable Urban Development for works at Christchurch, South Main Street and Saint Luke’s Church, Summerhill North. Christ Church was refurbished and is managed by Triskel Arts Centre, as a new arts and cultural space for the city.
the church was in a very, very poor state. There was very serious avian ingress into the building and the apse had completely separated from the building itself. The funding we received combined with investment from the City Council helped us bring this back into full health. The European Regional Development Fund was instrumental in making this happen.
After the works were carried out, he said:
The church organ which is considered one of the finest of its type in Europe and 12th century crypt was restored. The beautiful barrel ceiling was restored from scratch, and the original roof which had been badly damaged and the stain glass on apse was restored as well so from an architectural
point of view this has really gotten a fantastic makeover
